Therapeutic Counselling

Kia ora, my name is Fabian. I have a diverse experience of living between countries and cultures as a Singapore-born East Asian in Aotearoa New Zealand. I currently live in the Western region of Tamaki-Makaurau (Auckland) practising for the past 4 years as a mental health facilitator. Previously, I have held roles as a community builder, nutritionist, teacher, designer, gardener, musician, and chef. These add to an eclectic history shaping how I see and respond to the world today.

I facilitate personal identity transformations with a narrative therapy approach. I work in collaborative partnership style filled with curiosity, care and concern for the surprising stories about my clients that are often hidden in plain sight. I take an appreciation that individuals are always located between the relationships with thoughts, ideas, and the people of the social and cultural environment. This informs the way I understand the experience of disempowerment and the effects that has on people. Narrative therapy provides an alternative to other mainstream therapies and can be an unusually uplifting experience for all.

I am a qualified provisional member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors and a final year Master of Counselling student at University of Waikato. I currently provide pre-funded in-person counselling services to West Aucklanders through WALSH Trust (inter-disciplinary mental health and wellbeing agency in West Auckland).

Narrative counselling and therapy

When compared to mainstream psycho-therapies (such as CBT, ACT, DBT, etc), narrative therapists take a very different approach to helping people face problems, dilemmas and challenges. This approach respects that individuals are unique and have knowledge about themselves that are richer than the limits of a one-size fits all methodology or a diagnosis. Although these can sometimes be helpful, a narrative therapist would be curious to discover more about the client. What else is important to know about this client that might suggest that they are more capable than they give themselves credit for?

Narrative therapy provides clients the space to review a rich context of stories that they have experienced.

I educate with traditional Yang-style Tai Chi Chuan

Tai chi chuan (Taiqi fist) is a Chinese martial art style that emphasizes the internal flow of energy over the expression of external force. As an internal martial art based on the principles of Tao, the movements are concealed, effortless, and efficient.

Tai chi is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. It can also be used for meditation, exercise and cultivating general well-being. I am taught in the lineage of Sing Ong Tai Chi.

I offer group facilitation and counselling for men, including co-gendered circles, events and retreats

We are shaped by our stories and the stories that others tell about us. The sum of these stories can produce outcomes that contradict the preferences that we have for our lives. As a community of care, these stories can be re-written, re-told and re-enacted.

Keeper & Sage is about creating a space for people to tell their stories. In this process, they witness and engage with personal and interpersonal reflection to lead effectively fulfilled and meaningful lives. This strengthens the relationship and bond between themselves and their environment, family, friends, partners and children.

I host tea tasting & food events that emphasize ceremony and story telling.

I aim to be a bridge between the traditional Chinese Gong Fu tea culture and the Western world. The Chinese tea ceremony is about creating the experience of chilling and enjoying ourselves in the spirit of cultural union.

I am passionate about the health benefits of tea and how its effects as a social lubricant can be an alternative to alcohol. Perhaps it might interest you what it is like to be โ€œtea drunkโ€?
